It’s Not A Christmas Jingle 2023
/Dashing through the snow. In a one horse open sleigh...
No wait.
In Australia, it's more like Dashing through the bush. In a rusty Holden ute...
While I'm a huge lover of Christmas Carols (particularly Jingle Bells), when they start playing them in the supermarket in November, it's around now that we're starting to get over them.
So, to change it up a bit and get you in the spirit of the holidays, it's time for another round of... #NotAChristmasJingle, where I share 5 of my favourite Advertising jingles with you to break up the Christmas music.
As a child of the 80s, and as a person with a weird talent for remembering the lyrics to 1000s of songs, the jingles of many an 80s and 90s TV ad take up permanent residence in my brain.
I feel like it's my duty to share the earworms that often make great marketing tools.
And with that, let’s kick off It’s Not A Christmas Jingle for 2023.
Not A Christmas Jingle #1
Cottee’s Cordial
My dad picks the fruit.
That goes to Cottee's
To make the cordial
That I like best!
You know you know it!
What Makes This Jingle A Great Piece of Marketing?
One of the keys to a great jingle is to actually name the product.
There's been plenty of great songs used in ads that don't take the time to make the connection to the actual product and so people remember the song, but not the thing they're supposed to buy.
Make sure you mention the name of the product or service in YOUR marketing early and often!
Not A Christmas Jingle #2
Banana Boat
This next Not A Christmas Jingle (like many wonderful advertising jingles) takes a song people are already familiar with and adapts the lyrics to incorporate the brand or product.
And a great example of this is... BANANA BOAT! Fun sun protection!
To the tune of Mahna Mahna (made popular in my generation by The Muppets), we learn in just 15 seconds that Banana Boat is 30+ and lasts for hours and hours and hours...
Do do do do do do do do.
What Makes This Jingle A Great Piece of Marketing?
Anything that leverages people's memory, prior knowledge or feelings is a great way to help bring your brand to the forefront of people's minds.
And this jingle does that really well.
It's the same when you use alliteration or rhyming to make something memorable.
How can you link your brand to something your audience is already familiar with to make it memorable?
Not A Christmas Jingle #3
Ice Magic
We can't head into summer without an icecream related advertising jingle can we?
Of course not! And so No. 3 on my #NotAChristmasJingle list this year is... ICE MAGIC!
Another great contribution from the Cottee's marketing team –
It's Cottee's Ice Magic to be quite precise
And in just a few seconds
It turns into crackly choc ice!
What Makes This Jingle A Great Piece of Marketing?
This one takes advantage of rhyming, and an animated voice that sounds like it's reading a children's story.
And that's what this ad taps into - the creative, story driven way that you can use the product on your ice cream.
There's no doubt this is meant to be fun. It really speaks to the child in all of us. And I'll never forget the line "Whoops, I think you just ate mum!"
Does fun and animated work for your brand? How can you communicate your brand personality by using tone of voice in just the right way?
Not A Christmas Jingle #4
Decore
Now - most jingles work because they're catchy. And repetitive. And this one ticks both of those boxes.
My No. 4 #NotAChristmasJingle this year is - DECORE.
De de de decore
de de decore
de de decore
de de de
Do you remember this one? It's very 80s (because it was) and there was several versions (because it worked).
But what happened to the product? It failed to keep up with the competition when others put forward similar products in the market. Proof that a catchy jingle will get you started, but it's what you do afterwards that really counts (and if you aren't very clear on your differentiation, then you won't survive).
What Makes This Jingle A Great Piece of Marketing?
This is another jingle that takes advantage of a song that people already knew - Duke of Earl - and leverages it for product memory. It also takes the clever angle of people lip syncing in the shower as they use the product - something that's completely relatable to all of us (who hasn't sung in the shower at least once!?)
Not A Christmas Jingle #5
You Belong in the Zoo
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ZUxb_KWNpiQ
You're going to love this one. 'Cause there's animals.
And YOU BELONG IN THE ZOO too!
According to what I could find on the internet, this one was originally created for San Diego Zoo in the US, but was also used by Taronga Zoo and I distinctly remember it being used for Melbourne Zoo (as that's where I grew up).
Who doesn't love animals edited to look like they're singing the actual song??
What Makes This Jingle A Great Piece of Marketing?
It's one repeated message that applies both to the animals AND to us - we belong in the zoo to see them! It uses the best marketing device the Zoo has available – the animals - and makes it even more fun!
It's also clever because it's been used more than once, to advertise more than one Zoo. Super flexible advertising that takes into account the small marketing budgets of many Zoos, whose primary purpose is animal conservation and education.
I hope you enjoyed playing along!
